ਭਉ ਮੁਚੁ ਭਾਰਾ ਵਡਾ ਤੋਲੁ ॥
भउ मुचु भारा वडा तोलु ॥
Bẖao mucẖ bẖārā vadā ṯol.
The Fear of God is overpowering, and so very heavy,
ਮਨ ਮਤਿ ਹਉਲੀ ਬੋਲੇ ਬੋਲੁ ॥
मन मति हउली बोले बोलु ॥
Man maṯ haulī bolė bol.
while the intellect is lightweight, as is the speech one speaks.
ਸਿਰਿ ਧਰਿ ਚਲੀਐ ਸਹੀਐ ਭਾਰੁ ॥
सिरि धरि चलीऐ सहीऐ भारु ॥
Sir ḏẖar cẖalīai sahīai bẖār.
So place the Fear of God upon your head, and bear that weight;
ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮੀ ਗੁਰ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
नदरी करमी गुर बीचारु ॥१॥
Naḏrī karmī gur bīcẖār. ||1||
by the Grace of the Merciful Lord, contemplate the Guru. ||1||
॥
भै बिनु कोइ न लंघसि पारि ॥
Bẖai bin koė na langẖas pār.
Without the Fear of God, no one crosses over the world-ocean.
ਭੈ ਭਉ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਭਾਇ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
भै भउ राखिआ भाइ सवारि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Bẖai bẖao rākẖiā bẖāė savār. ||1|| rahāo.
This Fear of God adorns the Love of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਭੈ ਤਨਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਭਖੈ ਭੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
भै तनि अगनि भखै भै नालि ॥
Bẖai ṯan agan bẖakẖai bẖai nāl.
The fire of fear within the body is burnt away by the Fear of God.
ਭੈ ਭਉ ਘੜੀਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥
भै भउ घड़ीऐ सबदि सवारि ॥
Bẖai bẖao gẖaṛīai sabaḏ savār.
Through this Fear of God, we are adorned with the Word of the Shabad.
ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਘਾੜਤ ਕਚੁ ਨਿਕਚ ॥
भै बिनु घाड़त कचु निकच ॥
Bẖai bin gẖāṛaṯ kacẖ nikacẖ.
Without the Fear of God, all that is fashioned is false.
ਅੰਧਾ ਸਚਾ ਅੰਧੀ ਸਟ ॥੨॥
अंधा सचा अंधी सट ॥२॥
Anḏẖā sacẖā anḏẖī sat. ||2||
Useless is the mold, and useless are the hammer-strokes on the mold. ||2||
ਬੁਧੀ ਬਾਜੀ ਉਪਜੈ ਚਾਉ ॥
बुधी बाजी उपजै चाउ ॥
Buḏẖī bājī upjai cẖāo.
The desire for the worldly drama arises in the intellect,
ਸਹਸ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਪਵੈ ਨ ਤਾਉ ॥
सहस सिआणप पवै न ताउ ॥
Sahas siāṇap pavai na ṯāo.
but even with thousands of clever mental tricks, the heat of the Fear of God does not come into play.
॥
नानक मनमुखि बोलणु वाउ ॥
Nānak manmukẖ bolaṇ vāo.
O Nanak, the speech of the self-willed manmukh is just wind.
ਅੰਧਾ ਅਖਰੁ ਵਾਉ ਦੁਆਉ ॥੩॥੧॥
अंधा अखरु वाउ दुआउ ॥३॥१॥
Anḏẖā akẖar vāo ḏuāo. ||3||1||
His words are worthless and empty, like the wind. ||3||1||
ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
गउड़ी महला १ ॥
Gaoṛī mehlā 1.
Gauree, First Mehl:
ਡਰਿ ਘਰੁ ਘਰਿ ਡਰੁ ਡਰਿ ਡਰੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
डरि घरु घरि डरु डरि डरु जाइ ॥
Dar gẖar gẖar dar dar dar jāė.
Place the Fear of God within the home of your heart; with this Fear of God in your heart, all other fears shall be frightened away.
ਸੋ ਡਰੁ ਕੇਹਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਡਰਿ ਡਰੁ ਪਾਇ ॥
सो डरु केहा जितु डरि डरु पाइ ॥
So dar kėhā jiṯ dar dar pāė.
What sort of fear is that, which frightens other fears?
ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥
तुधु बिनु दूजी नाही जाइ ॥
Ŧuḏẖ bin ḏūjī nāhī jāė.
Without You, I have other place of rest at all.
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
जो किछु वरतै सभ तेरी रजाइ ॥१॥
Jo kicẖẖ varṯai sabẖ ṯėrī rajāė. ||1||
Whatever happens is all according to Your Will. ||1||
ਡਰੀਐ ਜੇ ਡਰੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਹੋਰੁ ॥
डरीऐ जे डरु होवै होरु ॥
Darīai jė dar hovai hor.
Be afraid, if you have any fear, other than the Fear of God.
ਡਰਿ ਡਰਿ ਡਰਣਾ ਮਨ ਕਾ ਸੋਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
डरि डरि डरणा मन का सोरु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Dar dar darṇā man kā sor. ||1|| rahāo.
Afraid of fear, and living in fear, the mind is held in tumult. ||1||Pause||
ਨਾ ਜੀਉ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਡੂਬੈ ਤਰੈ ॥
ना जीउ मरै न डूबै तरै ॥
Nā jīo marai na dūbai ṯarai.
The soul does not die; it does not drown, and it does not swim across.
ਜਿਨਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਆ ਸੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੈ ॥
जिनि किछु कीआ सो किछु करै ॥
Jin kicẖẖ kīā so kicẖẖ karai.
The One who created everything does everything.
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਆਵੈ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਜਾਇ ॥
हुकमे आवै हुकमे जाइ ॥
Hukmė āvai hukmė jāė.
By the Hukam of His Command we come, and by the Hukam of His Command we go.
ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥
आगै पाछै हुकमि समाइ ॥२॥
Āgai pācẖẖai hukam samāė. ||2||
Before and after, His Command is pervading. ||2||
ਹੰਸੁ ਹੇਤੁ ਆਸਾ ਅਸਮਾਨੁ ॥
हंसु हेतु आसा असमानु ॥
Hans hėṯ āsā asmān.
Cruelty, attachment, desire and egotism -
ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਭੂਖ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਨੈ ਸਾਨੁ ॥
तिसु विचि भूख बहुतु नै सानु ॥
Ŧis vicẖ bẖūkẖ bahuṯ nai sān.
there is great hunger in these, like the raging torrent of a wild stream.
ਭਉ ਖਾਣਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥
भउ खाणा पीणा आधारु ॥
Bẖao kẖāṇā pīṇā āḏẖār.
Let the Fear of God be your food, drink and support.
ਵਿਣੁ ਖਾਧੇ ਮਰਿ ਹੋਹਿ ਗਵਾਰ ॥੩॥
विणु खाधे मरि होहि गवार ॥३॥
viṇ kẖāḏẖė mar hohi gavār. ||3||
Without doing this, the fools simply die. ||3||
ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਕੋਇ ਕੋਈ ਕੋਇ ਕੋਇ ॥
जिस का कोइ कोई कोइ कोइ ॥
Jis kā koė koī koė koė.
If anyone really has anyone else - how rare is that person!
ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਸੋਇ ॥
सभु को तेरा तूं सभना का सोइ ॥
Sabẖ ko ṯėrā ṯūʼn sabẖnā kā soė.
All are Yours - You are the Lord of all.
ਜਾ ਕੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਧਨੁ ਮਾਲੁ ॥
जा के जीअ जंत धनु मालु ॥
Jā kė jīa janṯ ḏẖan māl.
All beings and creatures, wealth and property belong to Him.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਣੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੨॥
नानक आखणु बिखमु बीचारु ॥४॥२॥
Nānak ākẖaṇ bikẖam bīcẖār. ||4||2||
O Nanak, it is so difficult to describe and contemplate Him. ||4||2||
